I was gonna be a drummer in a metal band

I swore I was going to be a drummer in a metal band someday. It looks like a lot of fun. You get to sit in back of the band and rock out. You sit on a stool while you play, so you don’t risk falling over while you’re doing all that head-banging. Plus, I’m already a percussionist. (Pianists are percussionists, so let me stop you right there).

But as with a lot of crazy dreams, real life took over and it just wasn’t in the cards. It’s hard to dedicate your time to becoming a drummer in a metal band when you’ve got to work a 9-5 job to pay off your crippling student debt, make time for your friends and family, while killing mayonnaise, department stores, fabric softener, marriage, sex and bar soap like a good elder millennial.

I’d had almost forgotten about this dream. Until tonight! My partner and I were scrolling through YouTube (Oops, cable TV is also something we millennials have killed, sorry!) and stumbled across a metal cover of Toto’s Africa. And we couldn’t not watch it. I mean. Toto. Metal. Cover.

As it turns out, Leo Moracchioli‘s Frog Leap Studios has hundreds of metal covers on his YouTube channel. And he covers all kinds of tunes. We may or may not have been listening to these covers for hours now. Some of my favourites so far have been:

Let It Go

Ghostbusters Theme

Losing My Religion

It’s A Hark-Knock Life

Shape of You

Mmmbop

(Don’t Fear) The Reaper

Mamma Mia

Call Me Maybe

Baby Shark

So a list of ten may seem like a lot, but I was honestly restraining myself here. I didn’t post his Rick Astley cover. Or his Ace of Base Cover. Or his cover of the theme song of the Fresh Prince of Bell-Air.

Check out his channel and then tell me he hasn’t made you want to be a drummer in a metal band.

Another year, another Nablopomo!

Here we are, November.

My mortal enemy.

Not quite, but I like to challenge myself each year (read: encourage myself to write for non-day-job reasons) to participate in National Blog Posting Month! The goal is to write a blog post every day in November, but for me I will consider this challenge a success if I post a handful of times in November.

Spoiler alert: It doesn’t always go well.

In the past, I’ve used the Nablopomo website and prompts to give me inspiration, but after a quick google search, that doesn’t seem to be a thing anymore.

Are you participating in Nablopomo this year? Let me know in the comments so I can link your blogs in my Nablopomo posts!

And then it was November 5th

The past few years, I have tried and then failed miserably at Nablopomo (National Blog Posting Month, where the goal is to write a blog post every day for a month). I’ve often used it as a way to try to get back in to blogging in a more regular way, while enjoying the whole community around it.

I’ve been busy and distracted lately. I hadn’t even really thought about Nablopomo this year, until a friend on Twitter tweeted about it. She was asking if anyone participated in Nablopomo anymore, as it was coming up fast and she hadn’t seen anyone talking about it.

I think she received two replies to that tweet.

And one of them was from me. I said I would give it a try yet again this year, even if I didn’t make it more than a few posts.

Then November 1st came and went, and this blog sat unattended, as it has since August. Oops.

So having failed the whole ‘blog every day’ thing before it even started, I’ve instead decided to use Nablopomo as motivation to get some writing goals accomplished.

In no particular order, they are:

  • To finish my next recap for The Snark Squad
  • Finish writing two pieces for the different things I contribute to
  • Try to write 2 blog posts for this very blog!
  • Research and write two articles for my B2B blog

I know I’m certain to complete one of those goals, because I have a hard deadline for one of them. Is that cheating a bit?

Don't even care!

Cool. I don’t care if it is.

I also want to try to read some of the posts from my friends that are participating in Nablopomo and support their awesome work at doing the thing that I haven’t been able to stick to!

Have you ever finished a thing like Nablopomo? Tell me all about it so I can marvel at your awesome dedication.

Oh and if you’re Nablopomoing, let me know in the comments below so I can read your words.

Happy Nablopomoing!

Sunny ways

Today, the swearing in ceremony for our 23rd Prime Minister was held in Ottawa.

Our New Minister high-fiving kids before today’s ceremony, photo from ctvnews.ca.

Our outgoing Prime Minister had become famous for controlling guests lists to traditionally public events, restricting media access and even controlling what our scientists are allowed to say about important issues like climate change. He has an old-fashioned idea about women and their place in the world.

So it was refreshing to watch our new Prime Minister and his cabinet sworn in, a cabinet that represents the diverse cultures of Canada. It’s also the first cabinet in the history of Canada to have gender parity.
My favourite moment from today was Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s response to the question about gender parity:

Justin Trudeau: “Because it’s 2015”Asked why he went with gender equality in his cabinet today, Justin Trudeau said: “Because it’s 2015.”

The quote truly doesn’t capture the moment, so click on the link and watch the video clip. I’ll wait.
So, yes. I know governments tend to be all the same. I know politicians bend the truth and have hidden agendas.
But man, I can’t help but be a tiny bit hopeful that maybe we’re in for a positive change.
“Sunny ways, my friends.”

Manic Monday

I’m with Garfield, Mondays suck.

Case of the mondays

Today was particularly bullshit and I’m already counting down the hours until Friday. When I have days like this, I have to work extra hard at not letting my anxiety and other demons win. The three things that got me through today are:

  1. Good friends
  2. Great music
  3. Coffee

How do you survive the crappy days?

Nablopomo 2015, because why not?

It’s November! And you know what that means…

I haven’t had the best track record with National Blog Posting Month. I’ve tried and failed epically the last few years. But I like the challenge of it. And this year, my goal is to try some of the prompts this year, no matter how ridiculous I think they are, because it’s good practice. I’ve fallen out of writing with direction, so what’s the worst that could happen?

So, let’s do the thing again. Or at least… give it a go. Who’s with me?

I failed at the thing

Oh, hey. It’s December and once again, I failed at that whole Nablopomo thing.

doctor nope

I had the best intentions for this year. I swear.

I’ve been writing a lot more recently. Not so much here. But for clients. And a super secret side project. And for these awesome people.

So I fully expected to successfully write a blog post each. And. Every. Day. This. Month.

Then life happened. Some super exciting happy news one day, followed by no good, terrible very bad news the next.

Then work got busy, then my anxiety became all stirred up. We fought with our contractors, as our big home reno is still not 100% complete. Over a year after the hell mouth first opened up in my dining room.

And so on, and so on.

And then suddenly it was December.

So hey, guys. I failed the thing again. As it happens sometimes.

But that’s okay. Life goes on.

I’m a GBL girl

Magical Lifeblood in a Cup

I know this is probably not a popular opinion, but I’m okay with that.

I have a handful of opinions that go against the popular ones (I know, big surprise, right?)

Anyway. Here goes. I’m not a huge fan of the Pumpkin Spice Latte.  Sure, I’ll drink them when autumn hits. I mean, I’m not a monster.

But I don’t fall all over myself about the PSL like a preteen at a Biebs concert. The seasonal beverage that holds a special place in my heart?

The gingerbread latte.  It’s magic in cup. It’s my magical lifeblood (coffee, of course) with a little bit of holiday cheer.  And yeah, it’s early to start talking about holiday cheer. Especially when I’m a pretty loud Grinch about that time of year.

But when it comes to gingerbread lattes?

Bring it on.
